KATHMANDU, Sept 5: The bodies of 1,344 people who died in the devastating Bhotekoshi River Flood in Rasuwa on August 26 have been recovered so far, while 4,898 people remain missing.
According to the latest details released by Nepal Police Headquarters this morning, the recovered bodies include 52 boys, 33 girls, 269 women and 489 men. Another 501 bodies remain unidentified, Nepal Police Central spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle said.
Of those still missing, 2,448 are Nepali men, 482 are Nepali women and 1,350 are people reported missing by phone. Among foreign nationals, 274 men and 344 women are also unaccounted for, DIG Kafle said.
Bhotekoshi flood: 1,390 bodies recovered, 4,089 still missing
Security personnel continue search and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas, according to Nepal Police.
Of the bodies recovered so far, 1,030 have been safely buried and managed, while the identification and management of the remaining bodies are underway.
A total of 8,631 injured people have been rescued since the flood. Of those rescued, 3,655 have been placed safely in holding centers, DIG Kafle said.
Meanwhile, DNA samples have been collected from 2,232 people, including 1,260 deceased people and 972 relatives of the deceased. Nepal Police said DNA sampling is being prioritized to help identify missing people and establish the identities of the recovered bodies.
The Bhotekoshi Flood has caused extensive loss of life and property. Nepal Police, other security agencies and various government bodies continue to remain deployed for search and rescue operations and the management of recovered bodies.
