KATHMANDU, June 27: A 13th-century idol of Shakyamuni Buddha, stolen from Kathmandu and later recovered from the United States, has finally returned to its original home in Nhuchhewahal, Kathmandu, marking another milestone in Nepal’s efforts to reclaim its lost cultural heritage.
The restoration of the historic statue was made possible through collaboration among the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the Department of Archaeology, Nepal, and the Heritage Project.
Idol of Buddha unveiled
After the idol was traced and recovered in the US, the Department of Archaeology coordinated with the Tibet House Collection to facilitate its return. The repatriation process received support from government bodies, heritage organizations, scholars, and cultural activists.
The statue, regarded as a valuable example of medieval Nepalese craftsmanship, carries significant artistic and cultural importance. Archaeology Officer Sarita Subedi said international legal provisions require stolen cultural artifacts to be returned to their country of origin once necessary legal procedures are completed.
The Department of Archaeology has said it will continue diplomatic efforts to bring back other Nepali heritage items that remain abroad.
Officials also noted that transportation costs for returned heritage objects are generally covered by the countries or institutions where the artifacts were recovered.
The return of the Buddha idol adds to ongoing efforts to preserve Kathmandu Valley’s medieval woodwork, sculptures, and architecture, which continue to reveal the region’s rich artistic and historical legacy.
