BHAKTAPUR, June 30: A total of 40 tons of Taichin chiura, or beaten rice, was sold in a single day in Bhaktapur.
Chiura entrepreneurs here sold 40 tons of Taichin Chiura in the three districts within the Kathmandu Valley and in Kavrepalanchok district for Ashar 15, said Birendra Jati, a chiura entrepreneur and outgoing president of the Bhaktapur Cottage and Small Industries Association. Bitten rice is eaten along with curd as a delicacy on this day, also marking the National Paddy Day to observe the beginning of the monsoon season's paddy transplantation.

He said that the demand for Taichin Chiura has increased significantly, mostly on Monday. For years, Taichin Chiura has been chosen as one of the best varieties of bitten rice to be eaten mixed with yogurt.
According to Jati, 25 chiura mills in Bhaktapur produce 25 tons of Taichin Chiura daily. The famous Laxmi Chiura Industry in Bhalachne, Bhaktapur Municipality-6, sells 800 kg of Taichin Chiura daily. Around 300 tons of Taichin Chiura are sold from Bhaktapur to the Kathmandu Valley annually.
Taichin Chiura has been sold from Bhaktapur for Rs 250 per kg.
