606 foreign nationals from 36 countries still missing in Bhotekoshi flood

According to the Department of Tourism, the missing foreigners include tourists who were heading to Kailash Mansarovar through various companies and those traveling to Gosainkunda for the Janai Purnima fair.

KATHMANDU, Sept 18: As many as 606 foreign tourists from 36 countries remain missing following the Bhotekoshi floods of August 26.



According to the Department of Tourism, the missing foreigners include tourists who were heading to Kailash Mansarovar through various companies and those traveling to Gosainkunda for the Janai Purnima fair.


Department spokesperson Suraj Ghimire said the highest number of missing foreign nationals is from neighboring India.

The department said 189 of the missing tourists are from India, 33 from Australia, 30 from Canada, 55 from Malaysia, 54 from Ukraine, 32 from the United Kingdom, 65 from the United States, 33 from Latvia and 37 from China.


Similarly, tourists from Belarus, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Japan, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Vietnam, Estonia and Korea are also missing.


More than 188 domestic tourists have also gone missing.


According to Ghimire, 310 foreign tourists have so far been successfully rescued. Similarly, among those who lost contact after the floods, 13 people—three men, nine women and one other person—have been traced and are now in contact.


The local administration and security agencies have intensified search and relief efforts for those still missing.
