KATHMANDU, July 20: A total of 792,187 Nepali workers went to foreign countries for job placement in the fiscal year (FY) 2026/27, a decline of 5.6 percent compared to the previous FY.
According to the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE), the number decreased by 47,079. In FY 2025/26, a total of 839,266 people obtained work permits from the department to go for foreign employment. Of the total, 697,091 men and 95,091 women went for foreign employment in the last FY.

The DoFE records show that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the first choice of Nepali workers. According to the government data, 183,580 Nepali migrant workers went to the UAE in the review year.
Malaysia was the second attractive destination with 132,646 Nepali workers going to work in the country. Likewise, Qatar stood in third place with 132,051 Nepalis, and Saudi Arabia came in fourth place with 124,583 Nepali workers. Similarly, 33,920 Nepali workers went to Romania, a European country.
Region-wise, Jhapa had the largest number of workers leaving Nepal for employment. Last year, 16,286 workers from Jhapa district alone went to various countries for employment.
According to the DoFE, the largest number of foreign-bound Nepali workers was from Dhanusha district in Madhesh Province, with 15,698. In addition, 15,336 from Morang, 11,011 from Dang, 11,899 from Mahottari, 12,183 from Sarlahi and 10,264 from Saptari went to various destination countries for employment.
