Julián Álvarez had earlier put Argentina ahead 2-1 in the 112th minute after the match remained deadlocked at the end of regulation time.
The game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, forcing an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
Argentina took an early lead in the 10th minute through Alexis Mac Allister, but Switzerland fought back in the second half. Dan Ndoye equalized in the 67th minute to send the match into extra time.
Switzerland's hopes suffered a major setback in the 72nd minute when Breel Embolo was sent off after receiving a red card.
Argentina will now face England in the World Cup semifinals after both teams secured extra-time victories in their respective quarterfinals.
