KATHMANDU, June 3: The Bagmati Province government has resumed the registration of public vehicles, overturning a decision taken two weeks ago by former Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal to halt the process until further notice.
The decision was made on Tuesday by Minister for Labour, Employment and Transport Jairam Thapa, with the ministry issuing instructions to subordinate transport offices to continue vehicle registration as usual.
According to the ministry’s circular, the registration process will proceed under the previous system while further study and coordination with concerned stakeholders is carried out before any new directives are issued.
Public transport fares increased
The earlier suspension, initiated on May 21 following a directive from the Department of Transport Management, had created confusion among transport authorities and businesses.
Transport entrepreneurs had raised concerns that the halt in registration of newly purchased vehicles—despite completed billing and documentation—was causing financial pressure, including daily bank interest, loan repayments, and worker wage obligations.
Following mounting pressure from stakeholders, including transport associations, the provincial government decided to reinstate the registration process, effectively reversing the earlier directive.
