CHITWAN, July 22: Bharatpur Prison in Chitwan transferred 116 inmates to other prisons over the past year due to overcrowding.
Prison Chief Chetnath Dhungana said the inmates were transferred after the number of prisoners exceeded the facility's capacity. The prison has a capacity to accommodate 505 inmates.
Overcrowded prison making life difficult for inmates
Of the 116 inmates, 53 were transferred to Bhimphedi Prison, 26 to Nuwakot Prison, six to Jagannath Prison, 17 to Kapilvastu Prison, seven to Kaski Prison, and one each to Nakkhu Prison and Nepalgunj Prison.
The prison was housing 717 inmates—677 men and 40 women—despite having a capacity of only 505, including 475 men and 30 women.
The prison administration said overcrowding had led to a shortage of space and sanitation-related challenges.
