KATHMANDU, June 29: Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said climate change is making Nepal's agriculture sector increasingly challenging, urging greater investment in climate-resilient farming, modern technology and food self-sufficiency.

In a message issued on the occasion of National Paddy Day and Asar 15, Thapa said agriculture remains the backbone of Nepal's economy, culture and civilization, and paid tribute to farmers for their contribution to ensuring the country's food security.

He noted that the Constitution guarantees the right to food as a fundamental right, saying increasing paddy production is not only an agricultural objective but also part of implementing constitutional commitments.

Thapa, however, said farmers continue to face recurring shortages of quality seeds, fertiliser, irrigation facilities and fair prices for their produce, while paddy cultivation remains heavily dependent on rainfall. He added that climate change has further intensified the challenges facing the agricultural sector.

Referring to this year's National Paddy Day slogan, "Climate-friendly technology for paddy self-sufficiency and prosperity," Thapa stressed the need to expand climate-resilient and environmentally friendly farming practices. He said wider use of modern agricultural technologies could boost production and reduce Nepal's dependence on rice imports.

He also called for expanding irrigation infrastructure, ensuring timely availability of improved seeds and quality fertiliser, strengthening storage facilities, and guaranteeing fair market prices for farmers' produce.

Thapa further said agriculture should be developed into a dignified and attractive profession, urging all stakeholders to work together to strengthen food security and promote agricultural prosperity.
