NCP set to lead new Karnali government

SURKHET, July 26: A new government will be formed in Karnali Province under the leadership of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), following a national power-sharing agreement reached on Saturday between the Communist Party of Nepal, Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP).


The agreement, signed by UML Chair KP Sharma Oli and NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda", reshapes the earlier provincial power sharing arrangement and has had an immediate impact on Karnali.

The Karnali government led by Chief Minister Yamlal Kandel lost its majority after the Nepali Congress withdrew its support on July 15.


The following day, a no-confidence motion was registered against Chief Minister Kandel in the Provincial Assembly. A total of 16 lawmakers, including 11 from the NCP and five from the Nepali Congress, filed the motion, aiming to form a new government under the leadership of Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Jeevan Bahadur Shahi.


The Provincial Assembly had convened its 22nd meeting of the eighth session to discuss the motion. Addressing the House, Chief Minister Kandel announced his resignation.


Kandel formally stepped down on Saturday, clearing the way for the formation of a new provincial government.


Provincial Assembly Speaker Nanda Gurung said the next meeting of the Karnali Provincial Assembly will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, July 30.
