KATHMANDU, April 21: Nepali Congress(NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the debate over holding a special general convention within the party has now come to an end.
Speaking at an election review meeting organized by the Nepali Congress in Hetauda on Tuesday, he stressed that with the court’s verdict in place, the party should unite and focus on preparations for the 15th general convention.
Calling for an end to factionalism, Thapa said the party must move forward by embracing the new generation and bringing back supporters who had drifted away.
Pressure mounts within NC to hold general convention soon
He noted that the responsibility to unite all sections of the party now rests on their shoulders. Rather than dwelling on the recent House of Representatives election defeat, he urged leaders to think about the future.
Thapa said the election results have presented both opportunities and challenges for the party. He argued that reviewing the election should not be limited to identifying mistakes, but should also focus on shaping a stronger and more certain path ahead. As a party entrusted with governing the country, he added, Congress should not become demoralized by a single electoral loss.
He described electoral wins and losses as technical matters, saying the party participated in the elections to bring the country’s democracy back on track. Referring to the election held on March 5, he said that although Congress lost, the country itself “won” by steering the system in the right direction. The party entered the elections with the belief that even if it lost, the nation should not.
Thapa also called for an investigation into the assets of all individuals who have held public office since 1991, stating that any assets found to be acquired illegally should be nationalized. He made it clear that Congress would not take to the streets against studies and investigations carried out by the state under the rule of law.
Claiming that the report of the Gauribahadur Karki Commission, formed to investigate the Gen Z movement, is incomplete and biased, Thapa demanded a fresh probe. He also urged the government to form a high-level judicial commission to ensure an impartial investigation into the matter.
At the same meeting, General Secretary Pradeep Paudel stressed the need to review weaknesses seen in the election and move forward with new thinking and renewed energy.
