KATHMANDU, July 26: The number of demat accounts doubled in the past five years, with an increasing attraction of people to invest in the country’s share market.
According to CDS and Clearing Limited (CDSC), the number of paperless share accounts has crossed 8 million by the end of fiscal year 2025/26. Until FY 2020/21, the number of demat accounts were 3,789,000 in total.
Investors told to close multiple demat accounts within 35 days
The significant increase in the number of demat accounts has been attributed to more number of investors adapting to technology-based purchase and sale of shares. Likewise, the impact of the 10-unit policy implemented by the Securities and Exchange Board of Nepal (SEBON), which permits investors to apply for a minimum of 10 units of shares in the initial public offerings, has also helped increase the number, according to the CDSC.
