KATHMANDU, June 24: The European Union (EU) has stepped up aviation safety cooperation with Nepal by launching two regional initiatives in Kathmandu aimed at improving flight safety standards and strengthening oversight systems across South Asia.
According to a press release issued by the EU Delegation to Nepal, the initiatives are being held under the EU–South Asia Aviation Partnership Project (EU–South Asia APP), bringing together aviation authorities, airlines, industry representatives and technical experts from across the region.
EU positive about Nepal’s aviation safety
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), in collaboration with ATR, is hosting the third module of the Regional Aviation Safety Programme (RASP) from June 23 to 25. The module focuses on crew training, operational standards, decision-making, resilience and fatigue management.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Thomas Millar, Chargé d’Affaires at the EU Delegation to Nepal, said air safety remains a priority for Nepal and acknowledged the government’s recent efforts to address concerns raised by the European Commission.
The EU delegation also noted Nepal’s submission of the full package related to the implementation of the Corrective Action Plan, adding that officials at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) would review it in the coming months.
The press release stated that the second initiative, a workshop on regulatory updates in continuing airworthiness, will be held in Kathmandu from June 29 to July 2 under the South Asia Regional Initiative (SARI). The workshop will focus on European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations and modern aviation oversight practices.
The EU said the initiatives are part of its broader effort to support safer, more sustainable and resilient air transport systems in South Asia through technical assistance, knowledge exchange and capacity-building.
