KATHMANDU, July 15: Frustrated over falling returns for their produce, farmers from Tarkeshwar Municipality dumped tomatoes on the road at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Wednesday, staging a symbolic protest against what they called the government’s failure to address their concerns.
Tomatoes cost Rs 180 a kg in Pokhara
The farmers said they were compelled to take to the streets as they have been unable to receive fair prices for their crops. They demanded an end to the exploitation of farmers by middlemen and called for access to subsidized loans.
Accusing the government of neglecting the agriculture sector, the protesting farmers demanded the introduction of policies to fix minimum support prices for farm products, increase subsidies, improve market management and prioritize domestic agricultural production.
