KATHMANDU: Sep 4, The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), an umbrella organization of journalists in Nepal, has condemned the government’s decision to ban unregistered social media platforms, calling the move immature.

In a statement, FNJ General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal said the government’s decision to shut down social media was immature and obstructed citizens’ right to information.

He said, “Shutting down social media, which citizens use extensively for the exchange of information, means depriving them of their right to information. The government should have facilitated it, not imposed a ban. The decision to close it is immature.”

The Federation urged the government to reverse its decision. “Access to digital networks should not be cut off. The government must withdraw its decision,” Dahal said.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has decided to block all unregistered social media platforms in Nepal starting today.
