KATHMANDU, Jan 15: The Gen Z Movement Nepal, one of the leading factions behind the September 8 and 9 protests, has strongly objected to the Office of the Attorney General’s decision to grant what it called impunity to Rastriya Swotantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane in cases related to money laundering and organised crime.

Lamichhane is currently out on bail in multiple cases linked to cooperative fraud, including charges of money laundering and organised crime.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the movement urged the government to immediately remove Attorney General Sabita Bhandari from office and ensure justice for victims of cooperative fraud. It also called for a public boycott of Bhandari.

The statement further highlighted allegations against Bhandari, including her alleged involvement in a criminal racket in which swindlers reportedly extracted ova from young girls for sale on the international market.

Recalling the September 8 and 9 Gen Z protests launched to establish good governance and the rule of law, the statement said: “The government was formed on that background at the cost of 76 lives, and now protecting criminals in the aftermath is a grave insult and completely unacceptable.”

The movement accused the government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki of “hijacking the protest and capturing power,” arguing that the appointment of Attorney General Bhandari had undermined the supremacy of law. “Moreover, granting impunity to offenders is against democratic values, victims’ right to justice, and the fundamental responsibility of the state,” the statement said.

The group also accused Lamichhane’s supporters of breaking into jails, freeing prisoners and creating chaos across the country, alleging that instability was deliberately engineered to seize power by fostering a state of lawlessness.

According to the statement, around 15,000 prisoners were left roaming freely after Lamichhane allegedly forced their release from Nakkhu Prison on September 9.

It further noted that millions of victims of cooperative fraud are still awaiting justice, with some having taken their own lives and many others suffering from severe mental and physical trauma.

The Gen Z Movement warned that any form of impunity for offenders would amount to a betrayal of the uprising and a serious insult to the sacrifices made. “The law must be equal for all. Privilege for the powerful and silence for victims is unacceptable,” the statement said.
