KATHMANDU, July 17: The government has launched a three-month-long awareness campaign against dengue on Thursday.  The campaign launched by the Ministry of Health and Food Safety includes a weekly 'Clean Friday' event aimed at identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding sites near public institutions, schools and community organizations.

As part of the drive, local communities will be involved in a 'search and destroy campaign' in collaboration with various stakeholders including ward offices and civil society. The local authorities are urged to regularly inspect the places vulnerable to stagnant water in the auto workshops and construction sites and clean up potential mosquito habitats.

Educational initiatives like the 'Peer Education Programme' and 'School Sanitation Campaign' will be enforced to promote behavioural changes so that dengue can be controlled.

Chief of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Dr Gokarna Dahal, shared that dengue cases are typically on rise in July, while peak in August and lasting the risk until October. So, the campaign stresses the importance of public awareness and community engagement in curbing dengue. Increasing awareness and necessary measures are triggered in the dengue cases- from 56,000 in 2022 to 8,000 in 2025.

The Health Ministry has urged all concerned to make the campaign nationwide in collaboration with local governments.
