Govt plans Rs 15,000 monthly rent support for displaced landless squatters

KATHMANDU, May 14: The government is preparing to provide Rs 15,000 per month in rent support for the temporary management of displaced landless squatters, according to Hari Dhakal, chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives.



Speaking during a committee meeting on Thursday, Dhakal shared the update after ministers and officials from the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration were asked to brief lawmakers on the progress of squatter management efforts.

He said the government has already launched a screening process to identify landless people currently staying in various holding centres across Kathmandu.


According to Dhakal, the government plans to verify eligible individuals and distribute land ownership certificates through a fast-track mechanism.


The government has said it is giving priority to the long-term rehabilitation and management of landless and squatter families.
