KATHMANDU, Sept 16: The government has proposed providing mothers with at least six months of paid maternity leave and fathers with 42 days of paid paternity leave.
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam said the provisions have been proposed in a bill prepared to amend the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Rights Act, 2075 BS.

Taking to a social media platform on Tuesday, Minister Gautam said the bill will be presented to the Cabinet and subsequently tabled in Parliament.
She said helping parents spend adequate time with their infants and families is the responsibility of the state, particularly at a time when most families have limited themselves to one or two children due to changing lifestyles and work pressure.
Although childbirth is directly associated with mothers, Gautam stressed that the responsibility of raising a child does not rest solely with them. She said parenting is a shared responsibility.
