KATHMANDU, June 19: The Advertising Board has directed all concerned parties to remove misleading and illegal advertisements circulating on social media platforms within 24 hours, intensifying regulatory action against such content.

Issuing a notice on Thursday, the Board stated that a large number of unverified and improperly labeled advertisements related to medicinal and cosmetic products are being widely shared across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, and YouTube.

According to the Board, advertisements making exaggerated or unverified claims—such as hair regrowth, hair thickening, skin whitening, treatment of skin and sexual health issues, body fat reduction, and body modification—are increasingly being promoted without proper licensing or official approval.

The Board warned that such advertisements are misleading to consumers and violate existing laws, including provisions of the Advertising Regulation Act, 2076, particularly Section 9 and related legal provisions governing advertisement standards and approval requirements.

It has instructed all individuals, businesses, and digital advertisers to remove such content within 24 hours. It also directed them not to publish or promote similar unapproved advertisements in the future.

The Board further stated that failure to comply with the directive will result in legal action under the Advertising Regulation Act, including penalties against responsible individuals or organizations.

Officials said the move aims to curb deceptive advertising practices, protect consumers from misinformation, and ensure compliance with legal advertising standards on digital platforms.
