KATHMANDU, April 24: The government has decided to begin the first phase of squatter settlement clearance in Thapathali, Manohara, Sinamangal and Gairigaun in Kathmandu, according to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police. Authorities have indicated that remaining settlements will be addressed in subsequent phases.
Police have already issued notices to vacate the settlement in Thapathali. On Thursday evening, security personnel used loudspeakers to instruct residents to leave the area by Friday evening.

During a meeting with security agency chiefs on Wednesday, Prime Minister Balen Shah had directed that squatter settlements be cleared within the weekend, specifically by Saturday and Sunday.
Following the directive, police have intensified evacuation notices, urging residents to vacate the settlements by Friday evening. Meanwhile, Kathmandu District Administration Office has directed municipal police personnel of KMC to remain in standby position to vacate the squatters’ settlements.
PM Shah has long advocated for the clearance of squatter settlements in Kathmandu since his tenure as mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, although previous attempts had faced implementation challenges.
Authorities say the ongoing operation is being carried out in phases, with priority given to the four identified settlements in the initial stage.
