KATHMANDU, April 22: Purna Bahadur Khadka has criticized the government’s decision to dissolve student organizations and Free Student Unions, calling it undemocratic and reflective of authoritarian tendencies.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Nepali Congress leader said the move goes against democratic norms and values. He argued that student groups have played a central role in Nepal’s political evolution and remain an integral part of the country’s democratic framework.

Khadka highlighted the historic contribution of student movements, noting their role in major political milestones, including the 1979–80 student protests, the 1990 People’s Movement, and the 2006 mass uprising that led to the establishment of a federal democratic republic.
He also recalled that during the party-less Panchayat era, when political parties were banned, student organizations helped sustain democratic awareness and mobilize public opinion in favor of political change.
Referring to Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Khadka described the government’s decision as contradictory. He said the same democratic freedoms that enabled the rise of new political leadership are now being used to suppress student institutions.
According to Khadka, student organizations are not merely politically affiliated groups but legitimate platforms that raise concerns about irregularities and distortions within the education sector.
He urged the government to immediately reverse the decision and uphold the dignity of student bodies. Otherwise, he warned, students could once again take to the streets to defend democratic rights.
