The petitions were filed after both leaders were arrested on March 18. The habeas corpus petitions were submitted by Radhika Shakya, wife of Oli, and Yashodha Thapa, wife of Lekhak.

Their arrest followed the recommendation of a probe commission led by former justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, which was formed to investigate the incidents related to the Gen Z protests held on September 8 and 9.

The commission’s report had recommended investigation against the then prime minister and the then home minister over the incidents.

The hearing on the petitions is currently ongoing at the Supreme Court.
