Health care law conference emphasizes need for laws to ensure social justice in health sector

KATHMANDU, May 16: Emphasis has been laid on the need to draft laws to ensure social justice, as various problems are arising due to the lack of legal clarity related to health care.



Speaking at a three-day conference on health care law that began in the capital on Friday, participants pointed out the need for specific laws to address concerns in the health care sector.


On the occasion, Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla emphasized the need to formulate laws that provide protection to both patients and doctors. She said the judiciary is repealing outdated laws in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution.

Secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Parashwar Dhungana, said the ministry is working to improve the language used in drafting laws and make them easier for ordinary people to understand.


Nepal Bar Association President Prof Dr Bijay Prasad Mishra said the safety of health workers has been legally ensured and stressed that health workers should also provide services responsibly.


Nepal Medical Association President Dr Anil Bikram Karki said a new law should be introduced so that doctors can provide health services safely without fear or intimidation.


President of the Policy Research Institute, Prof. Dr Premraj Neupane, said the program was organized to support the formulation of necessary legal provisions to address various problems seen in the health care sector and its regulation.


Professor at Kathmandu School of Law, Prof Dr Geeta Pathak Sangraula, said the findings of the national demographic health survey have not been reflected in the relevant laws.
