KATHMANDU, July 2: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has urged the public to stay alert against hantavirus after Nepal recorded its first reported death from the rodent-borne disease, warning that preventive measures are crucial to avoid further infections.

Although only one fatality has been confirmed so far, MoHP said the risk of infection remains and called on people to maintain proper hygiene and minimise contact with rodents, the primary carriers of the virus.

Health experts say hantavirus is transmitted to humans mainly through direct or indirect contact with the urine, droppings or saliva of infected rodents. People can also become infected by inhaling virus particles stirred into the air while cleaning rodent-infested areas. The virus does not normally spread from person to person.

MoHP has advised the public to keep homes, workplaces and surrounding areas clean to discourage rodent infestation. It has also recommended avoiding direct contact with rodents and their waste, wearing gloves and masks while cleaning potentially contaminated areas, and washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after such activities.

People experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe headache, muscle pain, fatigue or breathing difficulties have been urged to seek immediate medical attention, as early diagnosis and treatment can improve outcomes.

MoHP also appealed to the public not to rely on rumours or misinformation regarding the disease. It urged people to contact the nearest health facility or the Health Emergency Operations Centre's Hello Health 1115 helpline for accurate information and guidance.

The advisory comes as health authorities step up surveillance and public awareness efforts to prevent the spread of the disease following the country's first reported hantavirus-related death.
