KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Gagan Kumar Thapa, elected president from the Nepali Congress (NC)’s Special General Convention, has pledged not to allow a situation where the leaders and cadres who entrusted him with responsibility have to bow their heads in shame.
Addressing leaders, cadres, and well-wishers at the convention venue on Wednesday after his election, President Thapa expressed his determination to build a party in which members feel proud to be part of the NC.
Shame! Shame! Shame! Shame on Nepal
“The responsibility of the presidency has been entrusted to me with great trust. I will not allow any of you to face a situation where your head is bowed in shame. I will uphold the dignity of the Nepali Congress. I will make this party one that all our colleagues feel proud to belong to. The party will act in a way that citizens feel the Congress stands with them in difficult times,” Thapa said.
He said the Special General Convention was not only a historic moment for the NC but also one of the most significant interventions by grassroots cadres in modern Nepal’s history. “Grassroots cadres represent the people—they are citizens. This is an intervention by citizens within the party,” he said.
Stating that the NC has not split under any circumstances, Thapa said there is no basis to question party unity when a Special General Convention is held through a legitimate process.
