KATHMANDU, July 23: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations' Country Representative for Nepal, Ken Shimizu, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari Yadav on Wednesday.
During the meeting held at the ministry, the two discussed branding local products from different geographical regions of Nepal and ensuring the sustainability of those brands.

On the occasion, Minister Yadav said the ministry has initiated the process of drafting the necessary laws for the protection and promotion of Nepal's local products.
The FAO Country Representative for Nepal drew the minister's attention to the fact that although the geographical indication (GI) system has been implemented in most countries around the world, it has yet to be introduced in Nepal.
He pointed out that because local products lack GI registration, valuable Nepali brands are being registered by other countries, causing direct losses to Nepal. He stressed the need to enact and implement the necessary legislation immediately to prevent this.
