KATHMANDU, July 3: The Ministry of Industry has proposed reducing its workforce by up to 28 percent through the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), arguing that modern technology would enable a smaller workforce to complete a larger volume of work more efficiently.

The proposal was put forward by the Office of the Company Registrar. According to Company Registrar Krishna Kumari Shrestha, digital systems and AI technology could bring significant improvements to human resource management.

Shrestha said the successful implementation of AI at the Office of the Company Registrar would substantially reduce the administrative workload and improve service delivery. She added that the Office has established an AI-powered call centre to respond promptly to the complaints and queries of service seekers.

The AI-enabled system allows service recipients to obtain information related to company registration and other services round the clock.

The Office has also launched a fully digital system to eliminate the difficulties and delays previously faced by service seekers. Under the new arrangement, applicants no longer need to visit the office to register a company. The one-stop online platform enables users to complete the entire registration process from home.

The system has also been integrated with the Inland Revenue Office, allowing businesses to obtain a Permanent Account Number (PAN) immediately after company registration. The Office said the integrated system would save both time and costs for service seekers.

Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari Yadav inspected the Office of the Company Registrar on Thursday.

During the visit, she instructed employees to ensure smooth service delivery and maximise the use of new technologies in the coming days, according to the minister's secretariat.
