KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Japan has provided an emergency grant of $1 million through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support communities affected by the recent flash floods in Nepal, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of Japan.

The grant will support water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions, including access to safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion. The measures are aimed at preventing waterborne diseases and protecting the health of flood-affected communities.

During a visit to Nuwakot, Umeda Naoto, First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, observed ongoing humanitarian response efforts, including emergency clinics, displacement sites and the installation of emergency water tanks.

Umeda expressed hope that the WASH interventions would provide immediate, life-saving assistance by restoring essential services and addressing urgent needs in affected communities, according to the release.

David Fisher, head of delegation of IFRC Nepal, said the floods had destroyed homes and livelihoods and disrupted access to healthcare and safe water for thousands of people.

He said Japan’s support would enable humanitarian agencies to respond quickly and help restore access to clean drinking water and essential healthcare services in coordination with the Nepal Red Cross Society.

The Embassy of Japan said the prompt implementation of the programs would help stabilize affected communities, reduce health risks and support their recovery and resilience.
