KATHMANDU, Dec 15: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Balendra Shah (Balen) has announced an ambitious plan to recover 1,859 ropani (over 10 million square feet) of public land currently under encroachment.
Shah made the announcement during a ceremony held to mark Metropolitan Day at Tundikhel on Monday. The price of freed land would cost at around Rs 200 billion in today’s government’s rate.

Balen highlighted that since taking office, KMC has already reclaimed over 208 ropani of public land worth Rs 23 billion and expects strong cooperation from all stakeholders to achieve the larger goal.
He also detailed ongoing infrastructure projects including improvements to 55 roads, installation of high-mast lights at 62 intersections and the addition of 13,340 streetlights on 5,318 poles to enhance nighttime urban beauty and street lighting.
The mayor said KMC has spent roughly Rs 910 million on heritage conservation, covering 276 tangible heritage projects and 125 intangible heritage initiatives and has provided medical assistance to 1,086 vulnerable citizens, with 210 receiving free treatment.
Balen emphasized that the metropolitan office is prioritizing capital expenditure over operational costs while focusing on environmental improvement, dust-free roads, waste management and creating a well-organized, illuminated city.
