KATHMANDU, July 3: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has begun segregating waste at source in 10 wards to reduce the volume of garbage transported to the Bancharedanda Landfill Site.
According to Sarita Rai, chief of the metropolitan's Environment Department, the initiative has been rolled out in wards 12, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 27 to extend the operational lifespan of the landfill site.
The city said waste segregation has reduced the number of garbage trucks sent daily to Bancharedanda from 20 to 15. Around 3.19 metric tonnes of waste is now being diverted each day after segregation began across seven service areas.

"The objective is to make waste transportation more efficient and reduce the amount requiring final disposal," Rai said.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City also plans to scientifically manage recyclable dry waste generated by households to promote reuse and recycling.
The initiative is being implemented under the Waste Collection and Transportation Procedure, 2024, which aims to reduce landfill waste through segregation, recycling and improved waste management in partnership with the private sector.
