KATHMANDU, June 1: Lawmakers in the National Assembly on Monday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Balendra Shah over his recent statement that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory.

During the National Assembly meeting, several lawmakers criticized the prime minister’s remarks, saying they had undermined national dignity and hurt the sentiments of Nepalis.

The lawmakers called for Shah’s resignation and staged protests inside the House.

Following the uproar and slogan-shouting by members, the National Assembly session was adjourned for 20 minutes.

The controversy stems from Shah’s remarks in the House of Representatives on Sunday, where he said that after becoming prime minister, he had learned that “not only has India encroached on Nepal’s land, but Nepal has also encroached on India’s land in many places.”

The statement has drawn criticism from opposition parties, border experts, and political leaders, who have questioned the basis of the claim and argued that it could weaken Nepal’s position on longstanding border disputes with India.
