KATHMANDU, Sept 9: Lawmakers have urged the government to ensure the sustainable resettlement of people displaced by the Bhotekoshi flood in a safe location.
Speaking during the Zero Hour of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, they called on the government to mobilize all available mechanisms to search for and rescue people who went missing in the flood on August 26 and provide adequate relief to those staying at holding centers.
Lawmaker Bidushi Rana said the Rasuwa disaster was an early warning from the Himalayan region and urged the government to regularly monitor glaciers and high-altitude risks, strengthen cross-border information sharing and build disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Lawmaker Bina Gurung said the Bhotekoshi disaster had caused significant losses of life and property as well as severe damage to Nepal’s tourism sector and people’s livelihoods. She called for the immediate resettlement of people who lost their homes to floods and landslides and special relief for tourism entrepreneurs.
Lawmaker Buddhiratna Maharjan drew the government’s attention to the need for regular maintenance of the Kanti Lokpath, a national highway.
Lawmaker Buddhiprasad Pantha stressed the need to address the aspirations of Gen Z youths and objected to the filing of what he described as false cases against young people who participated in the movement.
Lawmakers Bharat Kumar Swar and Bharat Prasad Parajuli called for intensified efforts to locate those missing in the Bhotekoshi flood and suggested establishing a legal framework for the cremation of people who remain missing.
