KATHMANDU, July 30: Madhesh-based political parties have called for an impartial investigation into the recent violence in Dewanganj of Sunsari district, justice for the victims and measures to preserve social harmony.
In a joint statement, the parties urged state agencies to exercise utmost restraint and impartiality while dealing with the sensitive situation following the communal tensions. “We express our deep sorrow, concern and sympathy over the situation that has arisen following the tragic incident in Dewanganj, Sunsari,” the statement said. They also paid tribute to those killed in the incident, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Stakeholders call for ending violence against journalists
The parties said state agencies must operate with restraint, impartiality and within the bounds of the law during communal tensions. They also raised serious questions about police intervention and alleged suppression following the incident. “It is the responsibility of a democratic state to make the truth and facts surrounding these questions public in an impartial and transparent manner,” they said.
The parties accused Prime Minister Balen Shah of remaining silent even as unrest in Madhesh continued for five days and questioned the conduct of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, alleging that the government’s response had contributed to further escalation. They called on the prime minister to immediately address the nation and assure citizens of peace, social harmony, justice and the rule of law.
The parties also urged the government to declare those killed in the incident martyrs, provide appropriate compensation to their families and ensure free medical treatment for the injured. They further called for measures to prevent infiltration into the ongoing protests.
The joint statement was signed by Mahanta Thakur of the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, Rajendra Mahato of the Rastriya Mukti Party-Nepal, Janamat Party Chairman Jay Kant Raut, Rastriya Nirman Dal leader Shamim Ansari and former Constituent Assembly member Ram Kumar Sharma.
