KATHMANDU, July 19: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said the party was built on ideology, sacrifice and dedication, rather than the pursuit of political power or internal electoral victories.
Addressing the “Gagan Thapa with the New Generation” program and the unveiling of a statue of veteran NC leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai (Kishanji), Thapa said politics within the party should not be confined to internal conventions and elections.
He said while competition among party leaders during conventions and participation in national elections are natural, the identity of the Nepali Congress extends far beyond electoral politics.
Ideology and Politics in Nepal
“We always compete during party conventions, and then we contest national elections. But being part of the Nepali Congress is not just about winning internal or national elections,” Thapa said.
Recalling the party’s struggle against the 30-year Panchayat system, Thapa said the movement was driven by the goal of establishing democracy rather than securing government positions or political office.
He added that the leaders of the time were inspired by democratic values and a sense of national responsibility, not by personal gain.
Thapa also said that during his visits across the country, he had met many families whose commitment to the Nepali Congress was rooted in democratic ideals and sacrifice rather than power, wealth or personal interests.
“Across the country, there are many families that have dedicated themselves to the Nepali Congress—not for positions, personal gain, power or influence, but for democratic values,” he said.
