KATHMANDU, June 9: Lawmakers from the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) observed a five-minute silence during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives in tribute to martyrs who sacrificed their lives in various democratic movements and in defense of the nation.
The proposal was put forward by Nepali Congress lawmaker Niskal Rai, who called on the House to pay respect to those who lost their lives while safeguarding Nepal’s territorial integrity—from Chiwabhanjyang in the east to Limpiyadhura in the west—as well as those who died during pro-democracy struggles and the recent Gen Z movement.

Rai urged fellow lawmakers to honor the martyrs’ contributions and express gratitude for their sacrifices through a moment of silence in the House.
Following the proposal, Nepali Congress lawmakers stood in their seats and observed five minutes of silence. Members of other political parties, however, did not join the tribute.
