KATHMANDU, May 12: The main opposition party, the Nepali Congress (NC), has sought clarification from Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) over his walkout from Parliament while President Ramchandra Paudel was presenting the government’s policies and programmes on Monday.

Raising the issue in the House of Representatives (HoR), NC Parliamentary Party Chief Whip Basana Thapa demanded an explanation from the Prime Minister. She said that constitutional culture, parliamentary tradition, state accountability, and the seriousness of the government must be upheld.

“An explanation on this matter should be given. Such incidents should not be repeated. In a democracy, dignity is more important than position, and public trust is more important than dignity. This should be taken into consideration,” she said, adding that the opposition demands a response from the Prime Minister.

She described the incident as a rare and unusual scene in the history of democratic parliamentary practice.

“In the history of democratic parliamentary practice, such a scene is rarely seen. While the President was presenting the government’s policies and programmes, the Prime Minister leaving the House is not a normal incident,” she said.
