KATHMANDU, June 15: Opposition parties in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday urged the government to take issues related to national sovereignty more seriously and sought clarifications on a range of matters concerning Nepal’s national interests.
At the outset of the meeting, opposition lawmakers rose from their seats in protest, prompting Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal to grant time to CPN-UML Deputy Parliamentary Party Leader Padma Aryal to present her concerns.
Tech Sovereignty: A Quest for Nepal
Aryal demanded a response from the government regarding remarks made by Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal during his recent visit to India. She also expressed dissatisfaction with comments made by Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle while responding to questions in Parliament.
Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Raj Rai called for Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s remarks on border issues, made on May 31, to be expunged from the parliamentary record. He also criticized incidents such as the destruction of SEE students’ mobile phones by submerging them in water, a tempo being pushed off a cliff, and police allegedly damaging a person’s house by throwing stones, describing such actions as unacceptable.
Yubaraj Dulal, chief whip of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), sought a government explanation regarding reports that an Indian Army helicopter had entered Nepali territory in Darchula. He also drew the government’s attention to the impending closure of a renowned tea industry in Ilam.
Nepali Congress lawmaker Renuka Kaucha demanded the publication of a report prepared by a committee investigating the assets of Home Minister Sudan Gurung.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party lawmaker Bharat Giri praised the courage shown by Nepali citizens in Susta, Nawalparasi, in resisting what he described as interference by India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). He also urged the government to be more sensitive toward the concerns of Nepalis living in border areas.
