BAGMATI, July 27: Political parties have begun discussions on forming a new government in Bagmati Province after the CPN-UML withdrew its support to the Nepali Congress-led government.
The Bagmati Provincial Assembly has a total of 104 members. The Nepali Congress (NC) holds 36 seats, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) 26, the UML 25, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) 12, the Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party (NMKP) three, and the Hamro Nepali Party two.
Call to form govt in Bagmati Province within 4 days
A party or coalition requires the support of 53 lawmakers to form the government. Although the UML and the NCP have agreed to form a new government, the two parties alone do not have enough seats to secure a majority in the provincial assembly.
"The UML is holding continuous discussions with parties that could become its partners in forming the new government," said Jagannath Thapaliya, leader of the UML parliamentary party in Bagmati Province.
Pukar Maharjan, chief whip of the NC in the Bagmati Provincial Assembly, said the party, as the largest in the assembly, has also begun discussions to form a government under its leadership. He said the Congress is holding talks with the RPP, the NMKP, and the Hamro Nepali Party to explore the possibility of forming a new government.
