KATHMANDU, May 29: President Ram Chandra Paudel addressed a special Republic Day ceremony held at Tundikhel, urging unity, good governance, and strengthened democratic values.

The President said the republic has guaranteed political rights and provided a pathway for national unity and prosperity. “It has connected citizens, inspired the resolve to build a shared nation, and given ownership of identity, language, religion, and culture. It is a great inspiration for nation-building,” he said.

He stressed that the republic is not just a political system but a way of ethical political, economic, and social life, calling for integrity, discipline, and value-based governance. He also warned that delays, irregularities, and mismanagement remain major obstacles to progress, and said citizens should not be disappointed by such weaknesses.

President Paudel noted that the government is focused on good governance, economic recovery, corruption control, and administrative reform, including the implementation of a 100-point reform agenda and structural changes aimed at strengthening the economy and public service delivery.

He said real transformation requires not only institutional change but also a shift in political conduct, accountability, and ethical standards. “Political changes alone are not enough unless they are reflected in practice and governance,” he said.

The President also said the constitution has established citizens as the source of sovereignty and brought services closer to the people through federalism, strengthening local governance and public participation.

On the occasion, the President was given a guard of honour by the Nepali Army. The event featured a helicopter flypast with a “Republic Day 2026” banner, aerial flower shower, flag hoisting, and the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace.

A joint march-past was presented by the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Force, while cultural tableaux showcasing Nepal’s diverse traditions were performed by local governments across the Kathmandu Valley.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Chief Justice Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Speaker, Chair of the National Assembly, ministers, constitutional body heads, security chiefs, diplomats, and senior officials.

Traditionally, the Prime Minister addresses such national ceremonies. However, this year, following a Cabinet decision and a formal request, the Prime Minister asked the President to deliver the address instead.
