The Cabinet formed the probe committee on May 11 under the coordination of former judge Achyut Prasad Bhandari. The committee was initially given 15 days to complete its work. Financial Comptroller General Shobha Kanta Paudel and Deputy Attorney General Achyut Mani Neupane are serving as members.
According to committee member Neupane, the main investigation has been completed, and only the drafting of the report remains. He said an additional five days are needed to give the report its final shape.
The committee had previously informed the Prime Minister's Office verbally that more time would be required. As part of its investigation, it has already recorded Gurung’s statement. Neupane said the statement-taking process has been completed, and the committee is now focused on preparing the final report.
The committee has been investigating share investments in Liberty Micro Insurance and Star Micro Insurance, companies linked to businessman Deepak Bhatta. Questions were raised over shares held in Gurung’s name in Bhatta’s companies, prompting him to resign as home minister on April 22.
Gurung has maintained that he borrowed money to purchase the shares. During the investigation, it emerged that shares worth around Rs 5 million were registered in his name in Bhatta’s company.
