KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The Supreme Court (SC) has refused to register a writ petition seeking to halt the 15th general conventions separately announced by the two rival factions of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by President Gagan Kumar Thapa and former President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Lawyer Maniram Upadhyaya, who is also an active member of the NC, had filed the petition on Monday, arguing that there was confusion over which central working committee of the party is legitimate and seeking an order to halt the convention schedules announced by both factions.

According to SC Spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, the court had already issued an order on the matter and another case concerning the issue is currently sub judice.

“An active member had filed the petition seeking to halt the dates of the general conventions announced by both factions of the Nepali Congress,” spokesperson Koirala said. “Since a petition concerning the matter is already pending before a full bench, and the full bench has already ruled that an interim order cannot be issued to halt the convention schedule, this petition was rejected.”

The NC establishment faction led by President Gagan Thapa has decided to hold the party’s 15th general convention from October 2 to 5. Meanwhile, the faction led by former President Deuba has announced a separate schedule to hold the convention from December 7 to 9.

The dispute over the rival convention schedules has now reached the SC.
