KATHMANDU, July 10: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order halting the work of the commission formed by the Balendra Shah government to investigate the assets of individuals who have held government appointments and public office since the 2006 People's Movement.

A division bench of Justices Tek Prasad Dhungana and Shrikanta Paudel issued the interim order after hearing separate writ petitions challenging the commission. The court also referred the case to a constitutional bench for a final hearing.

The commission had given concerned individuals one month to submit their property details, with only five days remaining before the deadline expired. Authorities had expected to receive around 20,000 declarations, but only about 12,250 had been submitted by 5 pm on Friday.

The final decision on the interim order will now be made by a full bench comprising three or more justices.

Senior advocates Radheshyam Adhikari, Ramesh Badal, Lalit Basnet and Bijay Mishra argued on behalf of the petitioners.

The commission's work will remain suspended until the court issues its final verdict on the case.
