Shiwakoti elected president of Asia’s leading election watchdog network

KATHMANDU, June 10: Dr Gopal Krishna Shiwakoti, chairperson of the National Election Observation Committee (NEOC), has been elected president of the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), one of Asia's leading regional networks promoting electoral integrity and democratic governance.



According to a press release from NEOC, Shiwakoti was elected by a competitive vote at ANFREL's General Assembly held recently in Bangkok.

ANFREL works across Asia to strengthen democracy, credible elections, citizen participation and good governance through election observation and advocacy initiatives.


NEOC said Shiwakoti's election reflects growing recognition of Nepal's contribution to democratic and electoral processes in the region. It expressed confidence that his leadership would further advance election observation, human rights, inclusive representation and informed citizen participation across Asia.


The organization also congratulated Shiwakoti and wished him a successful tenure at the helm of the regional network.
