Traffic disrupted on 19 highways as floods, landslides batter Nepal

According to the Department of Roads, 51 roads affected by the disasters have been reopened after debris and other obstructions were cleared. Efforts are underway to restore traffic on the remaining blocked highways, officials said.

KATHMANDU, July 21: Vehicular movement has been completely disrupted on seven highways, while traffic is operating partially on 12 others following incessant rainfall that triggered floods and landslides in different parts of the country.



According to the Department of Roads (DoR), 51 other roads affected by the disasters have been reopened after debris and other obstructions were cleared. Efforts are underway to reopen the remaining blocked highways, the department said.

DoR Spokesperson Shyam Bahadur Khadka said heavy equipment, including dozers, excavators and loaders, has been deployed to clear the obstructions. He also urged passengers and transport operators to travel only after obtaining the latest information on road conditions from the relevant authorities.


According to the latest update from Nepal Police, vehicular movement has come to a complete halt on the Kanti Highway, Mechi Highway, Diktel–Bhojpur Road, Tatopani Road (at Jurikhola in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-4), and the Araniko Highway. 


Meanwhile, traffic is operating partially on the Mid-Hill Highway (Bhojpur section) and the Pasang Lhamu Highway, among other affected roads.


Vehicular movement on the BP Highway has been restricted during nighttime due to the risk of flooding.
