KATHMANDU, May 14: The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office (KVTPO) has launched a special monitoring and surprise inspection campaign to keep watch on the condition of public transport operating in the Kathmandu Valley. The surprise inspection is being conducted to maintain safety standards and compliance with traffic rules.
The KVTPO stated that regular surprise inspections have started from Wednesday, aiming at passenger safety, improvement of public transport services, and reduction of accidents.
Special attention has been given to monitoring whether security equipment such as CCTV cameras and dashboard cameras, which are mandatory to be installed in public transport vehicles operating in the Valley, are in place or not, said Senior Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari, the Chief of the KVTPO.

He stated that monitoring was also carried out regarding the cleanliness of public transport, the behaviour of drivers and conductors, whether the public buses were carrying passengers beyond capacity, and adherence to traffic rules.
SSP Adhikari said, "This campaign has been launched to make public transportation operating in the Valley systematic, safe and passenger-friendly."
According to the standards set by the government, vehicles must have CCTV cameras and dashboards installed and must be kept clean and organised. Necessary action will be taken against vehicles that do not comply.
During the monitoring, a team led by SSP Adhikari conducted on-site inspection and monitoring of various areas of the Kathmandu Valley while travelling on a public bus.
The KVTPO Chief said that this campaign has been conducted considering the recent increase in passenger complaints in public transport, the high risk of accidents due to vehicle negligence, and the ineffective implementation of safety equipment.
He informed that continuous monitoring will continue on the main routes of the Valley in the coming days.
