KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Former Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said the Gen Z Movement sent a clear message to the state and political leadership on the need for good governance, accountability and respect for citizens.
Marking the first anniversary of the Gen Z Movement on September 8, Karki said young people had taken to the streets and digital platforms a year ago demanding good governance, accountability, transparency and a better future. Taking to social media on Tuesday, she said innocent youths lost their lives when the movement was suppressed.
Paying tribute to those killed in the movement and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, Karki also expressed concern over the extensive damage to private and public property, as well as national heritage and monuments, during the protests.

She said the wounds inflicted on the nation by the events would not be forgotten and urged all sides to act honestly, responsibly and vigilantly to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Karki said the Gen Z Movement had delivered an important message to the state and political leadership, stressing that a two-thirds majority in Parliament alone cannot guarantee political stability.
“Even a two-thirds majority in Parliament cannot ensure stability without good governance,” Karki said. “Political stability is determined not by parliamentary arithmetic but by the character and working style of those in power.”
She urged the government to take effective measures to ensure good governance, control corruption, uphold the rule of law and guarantee respect for citizens.
Karki also noted that the country is now facing another painful crisis—the Bhotekoshi flood—less than a year after the Gen Z Movement caused significant loss of life and property.
Calling for patience, responsibility and unity during the disaster, she urged people to support one another and stand together to overcome the crisis.
