KATHMANDU, 9: United Nations Resident Coordinator to Nepal, Lila Pieters Yahia, presented her credentials to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Monday, formally beginning her tenure in the country.
Appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres with the approval of the Government of Nepal, Pieters Yahia commended Nepal’s leadership in global peacekeeping as the largest troop-contributing country to UN missions. She also highlighted the UN’s continued partnership with Nepal to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, support the 16th national plan, promote inclusive growth, strengthen climate resilience, and create opportunities for young people to build their future at home, according to a press release issued by United Nations Nepal.

“In my meeting with Her Excellency the Prime Minister, I reaffirmed the UN’s respect for Nepal’s sovereign democratic processes and peaceful, credible elections,” she said. “We discussed national priorities, including youth employment, advancing peace and inclusion, sustainable development, and strengthening resilience to climate vulnerability. The United Nations remains fully committed to supporting these priorities and ensuring that no one is left behind.”
Pieters Yahia brings over 25 years of experience in development and humanitarian leadership. She previously served as UN Resident Coordinator in Mauritania and held senior roles with UNICEF, including Country Representative in Tunisia and leadership positions in Türkiye, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Bangladesh, the press statement reads.
