KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Party cadres raised strong slogans against the establishment faction at Bhrikutimandap, where the Nepali Congress (NC) Special General Convention is currently underway.
Issuing a warning to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to vacate the party’s central office in Sanepa, protesters close to Gagan Thapa chanted, “Vacate Sanepa, brother Gagan is coming.”
The mood at the special convention venue turned tense after reports emerged that the establishment faction had taken disciplinary action against General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
Hello, big brother!
Angry and energized cadres challenged the Deuba faction’s decision and expressed open support for Gagan Thapa through loud slogan-chanting.
As the election process to select new leadership began under the special convention, slogans echoed more intensely inside the hall.
After confirmation that Thapa had registered his candidacy for the party presidency, cadres declared him the next leader, chanting slogans that signaled the end of the old leadership’s era at Sanepa.
Rejecting the disciplinary action taken by the establishment faction, party workers claimed that the rise of a “new Congress” had begun from Bhrikutimandap itself.
