Veteran civil society leader Devendra Raj Pandey passes away

He was also a key leader of the 2006 People's Movement, a political economist, and a founding member of Transparency International Nepal.

KATHMANDU, July 18: Former finance minister and veteran civil society leader Dr Devendra Raj Pandey passed away at his residence in Bishalnagar, Kathmandu, on Friday evening after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 87.

Pandey was a former government secretary who resigned from the civil service before the 1980 referendum. He later became a leading figure in Nepal's pro-democracy movement. He served as finance minister in the interim government formed after the 1990 People's Movement. He was also a key leader of the 2006 People's Movement, a political economist, and a founding member of Transparency International Nepal.


His last rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Saturday morning.
